Greening Transportation
Whether it’s choosing a new vehicle with a higher MPG rating, using public transportation, or remembering to rotate and balance your tires, there are lots of ways to be environmentally responsible in our automotive and transportation lives. We are a country built on wheels, always on the go and one of the leading consumers of oil in the world.
Over the past 30 years, advances in hybrid, electric, and alternative energy vehicles have come a long way, but there are even greater strides ahead. There is limitless potential for new jobs, economic prosperity and a cleaner world with the advancement of vehicles with alternative fuel sources to gasoline. This section is designed to give you information about easy ways to lower your impact now, and ways to ensure the next wave of transportation vehicles are greener and readily available.
Here are some easy things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint on the road:
By a vehicle that not only suits your needs, but that is energy efficient. Choose hybrid vehicles or vehicles with high MPG ratings. Make sure to evaluate the City and Highway MPG ratings equally, as these numbers may be dramatically different.
Support automobile manufacturers that offer wide varieties of fuel efficient vehicles. Ask vehicle manufacturers about fuel cell, hybrid, electric and other new technologies that may be in development. The more interest in the market, the more likely these vehicles will make it to market.
Get your emissions tested every year to ensure that you are meeting government required mandates. Emissions testing helps get harmful vehicles off the road.
Be mindful of Ozone Action Days or pollution watches in your community. Stay off the roads during these days to contribute to the local government attempts at environmentally responsible action.
Maintain your vehicle properly by keeping tires rotated and inflated properly, fluids at proper levels and overall maintenance care. The better your car runs, the less likely it will be to emit extra carbon emissions.

Walk or ride bicycles to local stores or parks. Reducing the amount of carbon emissions from simple car trips to the store promotes good health and environmental responsibility.
Carpool to work! There are many carpool networks to join on-line or you can start talking to co-workers about it. This is a great way to get to know new people, while taking an extra car or two off the road each day.

Drive the speed limit. Driving above the speed limit puts added stress on your vehicles engine, thus causing an increase in gasoline consumption.
Park in shaded areas or in the garage during extreme temperatures to prevent engine stress or increased demands on your vehicles cooling systems. Consider driving with open windows instead of air-conditioning.
Move closer to work or school. Shorter commutes mean a greater chance for using public transportation or a shorter commute.
